Heavily influenced by African roots, Jamaican dancers have cultivated the art form known as Dancehall. The name Dancehall originated from the dance halls of Jamaica. Dance halls existed in the inner cities of Kingston since the 1950s/1950s. The dance halls acted as a place of solidarity and solace for the marginalized in a society where European culture was held to higher regards and African culture was stigmatized. This style incorporates dance, music, fashion and a sense of community.
